{"id":133,"date":"2010-01-29T12:58:22","date_gmt":"2010-01-29T17:58:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jessicaleader.com\/blog\/?p=133"},"modified":"2010-02-20T19:57:18","modified_gmt":"2010-02-21T00:57:18","slug":"research-is-actually-dangerous","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/jessicaleader.com\/blog\/2010\/01\/research-is-actually-dangerous\/","title":{"rendered":"Research is Actually Dangerous"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" title=\"krisppy kreme\" src=\"http:\/\/asecretwindow.files.wordpress.com\/2009\/02\/krispy-kreme-heart-doughnuts.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"248\" height=\"280\" \/>Research is not, as I said the other day, funny.\u00a0 Research is dangerous.<\/p>\n<p>First of all, I have this habit of putting food in my novels that is way too delicious.\u00a0 In two separate stories&#8211;one, <em>Nice and Mean<\/em>; the other, one called <em>Not That Girl<\/em> that may someday be unleashed to the world&#8211;I prominently featured doughnuts.\u00a0 Every time M and E would make up, or J, M, Z and B would gather at the shopping center, I would have to stand by and watch while they stuffed their mouths with chocolately, cakey goodness and try not to care that I didn&#8217;t&#8211;and shouldn&#8217;t&#8211;have any in my house.\u00a0 It was particularly rough when M wiped the extra glaze off the wax paper and then ate it.\u00a0 That&#8217;s what I would do!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" title=\"ravioli\" src=\"http:\/\/farm2.static.flickr.com\/1142\/1033325855_c7a8d0814f.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"324\" height=\"235\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Then there was&#8211;and is; in contrast to the doughnut scene, this part made it into <em>Nice and Mean<\/em>&#8211;the matter of ravioli.\u00a0 There&#8217;s an important scene in which Marina and Sachi eat ravioli.\u00a0 I love ravioli!\u00a0 Marina accidentally pours too much parmesan onto hers (I seriously hope this does not count as a spoiler), but I would eat it\u00a0like that anyway.\u00a0 I think they&#8217;re eating peas at the same time&#8230;I love peas with my ravioli!\u00a0 Every time I&#8217;d revise that scene, I&#8217;d be tempted with the prospect of a ravioli lunch, and let me tell you, there is a lot more fat in ravioli, even cheese ravioli, than you realize.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But now I think I&#8217;ve taken the cake for myself&#8211;or even, ha ha, the Cakesters.\u00a0 In my camping story<em>, <\/em>workingly titled <em>The Book\u00a0of the Dead<\/em>, some genius sent my characters Oreo Cakesters.\u00a0 It&#8217;s important how many come in a pack, so just now (before lunch, I might add), I went online to find out and ended up having to look at this website:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nabiscoworld.com\/oreo\/cakesters\/\">http:\/\/www.nabiscoworld.com\/oreo\/cakesters\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/jessicaleader.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/cakesters.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-134\" title=\"cakesters\" src=\"http:\/\/jessicaleader.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/cakesters-300x192.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"192\" srcset=\"http:\/\/jessicaleader.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/cakesters-300x192.jpg 300w, http:\/\/jessicaleader.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/cakesters.jpg 795w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Why can&#8217;t they just have the info without pictures?\u00a0 It&#8217;s so mean and tempting.\u00a0 Now I want Cakesters, and I should not be having Cakesters!\u00a0 (I don&#8217;t mean to make this blog another lament along the lines of Women and Food Denial, but I very much doubt that most peoples&#8217; healthy eating plans include regular consumption of Cakesters, especially in the middle of the afternoon.)\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>So I may be on the verge of deciding that I should forgo research&#8211;or at least, internet research on food.\u00a0 I am just going to make up all my facts from now on.\u00a0 Even if I need to learn how long it takes yeast for yeast to rise&#8211;too bad!\u00a0 I don&#8217;t want to be tempted with images of fresh-baked bread.\u00a0 They may be making their own veggie burgers from a mix, but I will just have to imagine the finished product, thank you very much (okay, maybe some people would balk at the idea of mix-made veggie burgers, but at this moment, when no peas or ravioli have crossed my path recently, I am finding it quite tempting.)\u00a0 If my subconscious is going to keep throwing tempting items into my stories, the least I can do is resist further temptation.\u00a0 And if I put errors in my story in the process, who cares?\u00a0 Wouldn&#8217;t you rather have me wrong than expiring of a heart attack before completing this novel?\u00a0 I would.\u00a0 Thank you.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"bread\" src=\"http:\/\/i197.photobucket.com\/albums\/aa246\/em_en_lj\/bread2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<p>ps I am sorry if I tempted\u00a0you with the pretty pictures here.\u00a0 I had to get them out of my system.\u00a0 Of course, now they are <em>in<\/em> my system.\u00a0 Hm.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>pps It has been pointed out to me that I have not really made good on my tagline.\u00a0 Consider this a love song to cake&#8230;a song of the broken-hearted.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Research is not, as I said the other day, funny.\u00a0 Research is dangerous.
