{"id":427,"date":"2010-05-18T10:52:15","date_gmt":"2010-05-18T15:52:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jessicaleader.com\/blog\/?p=427"},"modified":"2010-05-18T10:52:15","modified_gmt":"2010-05-18T15:52:15","slug":"blob-tag-or-adventures-with-a-thesaurus","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/jessicaleader.com\/blog\/2010\/05\/blob-tag-or-adventures-with-a-thesaurus\/","title":{"rendered":"Blob Tag, or, Adventures with a Thesaurus"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" title=\"blob\" src=\"http:\/\/www.nataliedee.com\/091905\/blob.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"234\" height=\"176\" \/>I didn&#8217;t like a word I&#8217;d used yesterday in my chapter, &#8220;swath.&#8221;\u00a0 It&#8217;s the kind of word that would turn me off if I was reading&#8211;too studied&#8211;and, in fact, when I got to the paragraph with the offending swath, I skimmed over it.\u00a0 Bad sign!\u00a0 I needed a replacement.<\/p>\n<p>Only thesaurus.com didn&#8217;t have any suggestions at all!\u00a0 I suspect that thesaurus.com is not the most sophisticated website for thesaurily endeavors, but I didn&#8217;t have the time to search for a better one, so I thought, &#8220;Okay, what&#8217;s the closest I can come to providing a synonym, even one I wouldn&#8217;t use, and seeing where that leads me&#8230;How about &#8216;blob&#8217;?\u00a0 Yes, let&#8217;s try blob.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The &#8216;blob&#8217; entry had many gross medical synonyms that I won&#8217;t name, but it also had, on the sidebar, a list of what I can only assume are frequently used terms involving blob.\u00a0 They&#8217;re so intriguing, I had to share:<\/p>\n<div id=\"sM\">\n<div id=\"s0\"><a href=\"http:\/\/ask.reference.com\/web?q=Blob+Volleyball&amp;qsrc=2892&amp;l=dir&amp;o=10601\">Blob volleyball<\/a><\/div>\n<div id=\"s1\"><a href=\"http:\/\/ask.reference.com\/web?q=Blob+Fish&amp;qsrc=2892&amp;l=dir&amp;o=10601\">Blob fish<\/a><\/div>\n<div id=\"s2\"><a href=\"http:\/\/ask.reference.com\/web?q=Blob+Soccer&amp;qsrc=2892&amp;l=dir&amp;o=10601\">Blob soccer<\/a><\/div>\n<div id=\"s3\"><a href=\"http:\/\/ask.reference.com\/web?q=Animated+Blob&amp;qsrc=2892&amp;l=dir&amp;o=10601\">Animated blob<\/a><\/div>\n<div id=\"s4\"><a href=\"http:\/\/ask.reference.com\/web?q=Blob+Game&amp;qsrc=2892&amp;l=dir&amp;o=10601\">Blob game<\/a><\/div>\n<div id=\"s5\"><a href=\"http:\/\/ask.reference.com\/web?q=Useless+Blob&amp;qsrc=2892&amp;l=dir&amp;o=10601\">Useless blob<\/a><\/div>\n<div id=\"s6\"><a href=\"http:\/\/ask.reference.com\/web?q=Emo+Blobs&amp;qsrc=2892&amp;l=dir&amp;o=10601\">Emo blobs<\/a><\/div>\n<div id=\"s7\"><a href=\"http:\/\/ask.reference.com\/web?q=Blob+Sculpin&amp;qsrc=2892&amp;l=dir&amp;o=10601\">Blob sculpin<\/a><\/div>\n<div id=\"s8\"><a href=\"http:\/\/ask.reference.com\/web?q=Blob+Movie&amp;qsrc=2892&amp;l=dir&amp;o=10601\">Blob movie<\/a><\/div>\n<div id=\"s9\"><a href=\"http:\/\/ask.reference.com\/web?q=Blob+Fish+Facts&amp;qsrc=2892&amp;l=dir&amp;o=10601\">Blob fish facts<\/a><\/div>\n<div id=\"s10\"><a href=\"http:\/\/ask.reference.com\/web?q=Blob+Oracle&amp;qsrc=2892&amp;l=dir&amp;o=10601\">Blob oracle<\/a><\/div>\n<div id=\"s11\"><a href=\"http:\/\/ask.reference.com\/web?q=Adopt+a+Blob&amp;qsrc=2892&amp;l=dir&amp;o=10601\">Adopt a blob<\/a><\/div>\n<div><em>Adopt a blob?<\/em>\u00a0 Definitely sounds like a scheme I&#8217;d have come up with in third grade.\u00a0 And <em>blob oracle?<\/em>\u00a0 Is that like when Tiresias and\u00a0Cassandra moosh together in crazy Cirque de Soleil type moves?\u00a0 \u00a0That will be my next research report&#8211;although I must say, maybe I should use these as writing prompts.\u00a0 &#8220;Adopt a Blob&#8221; would make a great chapter book title, no?\u00a0 You head it here, folks!\u00a0 No biting off the blob!<\/div>\n<div>Now back to our regularly scheduled programming.\u00a0 If you have a useful synonym for &#8216;swath,&#8217; do let me know.\u00a0<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I didn&#8217;t like a word I&#8217;d used yesterday in my chapter, &#8220;swath.&#8221;\u00a0 It&#8217;s the kind of word that would turn me off if I was reading&#8211;too studied&#8211;and, in fact, when I got to the paragraph with the offending swath, I skimmed over it.\u00a0 Bad sign!\u00a0 I needed a replacement.
