{"id":512,"date":"2010-06-18T11:39:07","date_gmt":"2010-06-18T16:39:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jessicaleader.com\/blog\/?p=512"},"modified":"2010-06-17T11:59:36","modified_gmt":"2010-06-17T16:59:36","slug":"nice-and-mean-at-the-wellesley-booksmith","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/jessicaleader.com\/blog\/2010\/06\/nice-and-mean-at-the-wellesley-booksmith\/","title":{"rendered":"Nice and Mean at the Wellesley Booksmith!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"me reading at wellesley booksmith\" src=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_3Wa5aNYHsow\/TBectmwJbfI\/AAAAAAAABoY\/Kzj1unXrQsM\/s1600\/IMG00229-20100614-1841.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"346\" height=\"259\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Wellesley Booksmith Party. \u00a0More friends!\u00a0 More strangers!\u00a0 More ways to share <em>Nice and Mean!<\/em><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/i830.photobucket.com\/albums\/zz224\/jmleader\/600.jpg\" alt=\"null\" width=\"269\" height=\"202\" \/><\/p>\n<p>For this event, I actually read, and it was so fun!\u00a0 Once again, I was thrilled by the people who came.\u00a0 Grad school friends who drove in from Cape Cod and Massachusetts!\u00a0 Friends of friends\u2014one of whom I\u2019d co-bridesmaided with back in 2001!\u00a0 My very first boss from when I was a camp counselor and her 9-year-old daughter!\u00a0 Writers I\u2019d met on the internets, one of whom blogged about the event in such vivid detail that I\u2019m gobsmacked to have this record of it.\u00a0 All this in addition to friends I see frequently and, once again, some people I\u2019d never met who just thought the book sounded good.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/i830.photobucket.com\/albums\/zz224\/jmleader\/601.jpg\" alt=\"Wellesley Booksmith--2\/2\" width=\"301\" height=\"226\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Probably the\u00a0best thing about giving the reading was hearing people laugh.\u00a0 I shared Sachi\u2019s chapter three, in which she picks her little sister up from school. (This is the second time I\u2019ve mentioned that chapter here.\u00a0 I\u2019m obviously attached to it.)\u00a0 Everybody is saying, \u201cPallavi is the princess!\u201d\u00a0 Sachi asks, \u201cWow, how\u2019d that happen?\u201d and Pallavi says something to the effect of, \u201cI don\u2019t know!\u00a0 I just asked everybody, \u2018Who wants me to be the princess?\u2019 and they all said, \u2018I do!\u2019 and so I was!\u201d\u00a0 I hardly base anything in my books on real life\u2014whenever something does slip in, it\u2019s usually the first to get cut\u2014but this incident was actually inspired by the daughter of a friend of mine, and apparently everybody else thought it was just as funny as I did.\u00a0 Hooray for laughter!<\/p>\n<p>I had a few special effects that I was proud of, too.\u00a0 One was the Nice and Mean Memories Clothesline\u2014ribbons I\u2019d strung up along with slips of paper to share their Nice or Mean memories.\u00a0 I did this in New York, too, and some fun ones have emerged, such as, \u201cI drove my 8<sup>th<\/sup>-grade teacher, who was a nun, crazy.\u201d\u00a0 I actually know who wrote this and the story involves writing fake diary entries about time spent as a Satanist.\u00a0 I feel bad for the nun, but this story always makes me laugh, and I like having it preserved on the Mean Clothesline.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/tickettoanywhere.blogspot.com\/2010\/06\/event-recap-jessica-leader-book-signing.html\">Ticket to anywhere blogged about the Q&amp;A sessio<\/a>n, so if you\u2019re curious about what people wanted to know after the reading, head on over.\u00a0 You can also win the copy that I signed for her!<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m so grateful to the bookstore for hosting me.\u00a0 When I asked New Englanders where I should have my Boston party, I heard almost unanimously, \u201cThe Wellesley Booksmith.\u201d\u00a0 It\u2019s not hard to see why: they have fantastic write-ups of books classic and new; they have a vast collection of gently used books in the basement; their toys and favors don\u2019t seem too commercial; and their staff is helpful and fun.\u00a0 I hope to return there soon, possibly as an author, but most likely as a customer!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/i830.photobucket.com\/albums\/zz224\/jmleader\/613.jpg\" alt=\"jjljl\" width=\"160\" height=\"120\" \/>Me and lovely Vermont College grad school peeps!
