Nice and Mean NYC Launch Party!

Posted in Nice and Mean on 06/16/2010 10:42 pm by jess

me signing
As I sit down in my mom’s apartment to write about my very first book party ever in this world, planet and universe, major construction is taking place above my head.  I cannot for the life of me imagine what kind of remodeling they are doing up there, but it sounds like they are thumping down huge Grecian pillars that will burst through the ceiling at any moment.  After the events of this past week, I can pretty much die happy, but I’m also going to put in a vote that I get to keep living.  Now that I know how much fun there is to be had when your book comes out, I want to get in as much as possible.

The first book party event took place at The Bank Street Bookstore.  Because the bookstore is somehow affiliated with the K-8 school and the teachers’ college of the same name, it doesn’t just have excellent books—it has kits for science experiments and homemade soap!  I felt right at home and got to work setting up.

We had mad food, man.  My mom had volunteered/been deputized/kind of been forced since I was getting in so late to shop, and there was a lot to lay out—including the book-cover cake that my partner commissioned from the Food Emporium and the mom-designed napkins!  I’m sure there is some teenage version of myself that thinks these are a little, I don’t know, hinky, but the adult me is like, “This is great!”

The next stage of the game was the advent of people who made me want to cry with happiness.  Which was pretty much all of them.  The first guests were high-school students I’d met doing research for the novel.  One of them had randomly contacted me a few days before the launch (quote from email: “i hope you’re not a weird old person who doesn’t get crazy teen abbreviations”)—and I’d invited him to the party, so I was thrilled when he came (from Long Island!) and brought one of the girls who was on the trip as well (from Connecticut!)

Let’s see, who made me cry next?  DP, one of my incredibly talented classmates from the Vermont College MFA, up all the way from Brooklyn where she teaches.  So great to see her, although I didn’t get to snap a pic.  My 9th-grade English teacher, who for years read drafts of my novels.  Family friend Suzy, who inspired me to write for kids in the first place.  The principal of the school where I taught, who every year makes that school even cooler.  Old friends.  Parents of old friends.  My sister’s friends.  My partner’s friends.  My partner’s mom, down from Syracuse.  My agent, and her three adorable children.  Amazing grad school writers.  Lots and lots and lots of people.  I was really moved.

One notable moment: Seeing my mom, my 9th-grade English teacher and my agent talking and thinking, “Collectively, they all know way too much about me!  I’m not going anywhere near that conversation!”

jill micol marianna

me rey alex

Another notable experience: after hearing many Tenners advise on the subject, I’d decided not to read from Nice and Mean.  I’d been advised, “Socialize!” and had set it up more like a party than a reading, although my display did draw in a 5th-grader, who asked her mom to buy a copy.  Partly I was following the Tenners’ advice in my set-up, but frankly, there were so many amazing writers at the party (see below), and the thought of reading in front of them reminded me of little girls who pull their dresses over their heads in public.  You’re like, “Yeah, that’s kind of cute—but not here.”

But you know what?  After the party, even though everybody was so nice and congratulatory, I had a strange little feeling like something was missing.  (Ogads—they’ve started dismantling the temple again upstairs!  They are seriously going to kill us all!  Hold on, must change rooms.)  All right, what was I saying?  Yes—something was missing.  It was like going to a wedding shower and not having someone open the presents—a piece of theatre that didn’t have the catharsis.  When I read in Boston on Monday (and I will post about that in a moment), I thought, Ahh!  This is what the book release occasion needs!

I honestly don’t know if I would do things differently if I had the chance again; I still shudder a little to think of reading in front of some of those guys, which is idiotic, since most of them are from grad school and we’ve all done the writerly equivalent of seeing each other in our underwear anyway.  (That is a metaphor.  Vermont College is not a hook-up scene, believe me.)  I guess I’ll just file those observations under “things to remember next time you are nervous,” but mostly, I file this night under E for Excellent.  Thanks again for coming, everyone.

Blog Tour Wrap-Up!

Posted in Nice and Mean, Promotion of Self and Others on 06/13/2010 09:57 am by jess

Hey, everyone!  Thank you so much for taking part in the Nice and Mean blog tour!

Don’t forget–to win the Grand Prize that includes your very own copy of Nice and Mean, you have to leave a comment on this blog tallying up your points.  I will announce the winner by Wednesday, June 16th.  Get out your calculators, my friends!

It’s been so fun to read your thoughts throughout the week, especially your own favorite Nice or Mean characters (thank you, Page Flipper!) and your thoughts on whether you are nice or mean (GreenBeanTeenQueen.)

Thanks, too, to my wonderful hosts, who went along for the ride and occasionally had to battle Blogger.  The Story Siren, Green Bean Teen Queen, The Page Flipper, Reading in Color and Laurens Crammed Bookshelf are great!

This whole week, in fact, has been great.  The NYC book launch party brought friends from all walks of life, including two kids I met on a research trip last year who journeyed into the city just for this!  I’m looking forward to uploading pictures etc.

Now, though, I’m off to throw a wedding shower for my best friend.  She has been so wonderfully supportive throughout the whole book-launch process, and I can’t wait to shower her with a very cool game I’ve devised.

Have a good Sunday, everyone!

ps We have one winner so far from the blog tour stops–Caitlin  Can’t wait to connect with the other winners!

Nice and Mean Grand Prize Giveaway!

Posted in Give-aways!, Nice and Mean, Promotion of Self and Others on 06/07/2010 09:11 am by jess

I posted last night about the awesome bloggers who are hosting me on the Nice and Mean Release-Week Blog Tour.  Now learn how you can win a copy of Nice and Mean in the Nice and Mean Grand Prize Drawing which includes everything you’d win in the other contests (pictured below; described here), plus a personally inscribed copy of Nice and Mean!  You can also win swag from the top photo by winning the Battle of Wits.  More on that in a minute.  First, pretty pictures of the prizes.

Sweet, sparkly, shmancy–YOURS

Grand Prize winners get their choice of these!

I think you’re going to like Nice and Mean.  I mean, of course I do; I wrote it–but still.  There’s the heartache of a friend thinking you’re not cool enough for her.  The headache of a friend thinking she’s cooler than she is.  The stomach ache of having to work on a cool project (video!  hello!) with someone who just does not get you and the soul ache (okay, that’s kind of cheesy, but bear with me) of screwing everything up and being abandoned —and trying to put things back together.  I hope you’ll sign on to read it and can’t wait to chat with you about it.

For now, though, I want to know, from your votes in the poll to the left,

Who are your favorite nice and mean characters?

You’ll hear mine on Wednesday at The Page Flipper, but I have a feeling yours will make me go, “Yeah!”

And that leads us to the contest.  How do you earn points to win?  By commenting, here there and everywhere, about all things Nice and Mean.

Earn points when you do the following:

–Comment on the blog tour (hosts listed here; one point earned for each comment)

–Spread the word about the blog tour on Twitter, FB or your own blog (one point for each nugget of word-spreading)

-Vote in the polls (over there, to the left!) for your favorite nice and mean characters, then explain your choice in the comments (one point for each comment, and multiple comments are a-okay)

The Battle of Wits: If you nominate the character who is voted Nicest Character or Meanest Character, you win the swag in the top photo!  How do you do this?

-Email me (jess@jessicaleader.com) to include a new character in either poll (Some of the ones you see were my suggestions to get you started.)  The earlier you enter, the more likely people will vote for your guy or gal. Get on it!  That doesn’t earn a point, but you’ll earn if you…

–Comment on this blog to explain why your character(s) should win

 – Tweet or post on Facebook about the contest and your supreme entry, (#nice&meanwits#).  Go, team You!  You’ll accumulate points as you try to persuade people, so in theory, you could become the Grand Prize winner, too.  I wonder what I would do then?  Maybe…two copies of Nice and Mean–one to keep, one to share?

** -Stop by this blog by Saturday, June 12th to report your points.

I can’t wait to hear who you nominate!  And hey–thanks for stopping by.  So Nice of you!   I Mean it!

Nice and Mean to be released this week!

Ooooh, I am so absolutely excited for the launch week of Nice and Mean and for my blog tour!  I feel so lucky to have landed with these hosts.  They asked fun questions and their blogs are quality, I’m telling you—quality.  So here’s where I’ll be on each day of the week, and I hope you’ll stop by to Win Valuable Prizes (more on that below):

Monday at The Story Siren: My Road to Publication and Other Rocky Tales[Edited to add on Monday morning: Blogger issues are delaying this one, but we hope to be up by lunch.]

Tuesday at Green Bean Teen Queen: My Worst Memory of Being Assigned to Work With Someone…Unpleasant

Wednesday at The Page Flipper: My Top Five Nice and Mean Characters

Thursday at Reading in Color: What was it like to write from the point of view of an Indian-American girl?

Friday at Lauren’s Crammed Bookshelf: What’s Unique about Nice and Mean and getting The Call

Now, what are these prizes I speak of?

Sweet, sparkly, shmancy--YOURS

Amazing books you can have for free!

And what are those objects in the picture, in case I can’t read the fine print or wonder what’s in the snack bag?

Nice and Mean-related swag

* signed N&M bookmarks
Swag of Nice-Girl Sachi:
* Indian bangle bracelets (not as special as Nani’s ring, but still important)
* Indian coconut candies (these are so good–you’re lucky Jess didn’t eat all of them)
Swag of Mean Marina:
* Dr. Pepper lip gloss (Dr. Pepper: the only drink)
* Pilot Rolling Ball pens (PRBs: the only pen)
* stick-on rhinestones (Yuck!  Marina wishes you wouldn’t mention these.  The mess with Rachel is their fault!)

Et puis, les livres (and now, the books):
* Summer Camp Secrets by Katy Grant (for all your middle-grade reading pleasure)
* The Summer I Turned Pretty by Jenny Han (hm, I’m sensing a summer theme)
* Saving Maddie by Varian Johnson (a page-turner by my indispensible friend)
 * Boys Are Dogs by Leslie Margolis (one of my new favorite middle-grade books)
* A signed copy of Need by Carrie Jones (yes!  Signed by the author!  Not by me that would be weird)
 * The Year I Turned Sixteen by Diane Schwemm (worth all ten pounds)
* Front Page Face-Off by Jo Whittemore (debut author’s madcap middle-grade)
Wow!  That’s amazing!  How do I win me some of that?

You’ll have to stop by the blog tour hosts.  They have their own super-secret winner-picker methods that even I am not privy to.  But let me tell you, if you find a suspicious number of entries from people named, I don’t know, Shmessica Deader, or Princess Shmoopie Freader, it might be because I am trying to win back some of those coconut candies.  I am serious.  The Dr. Pepper lip gloss may be cool and the pens divine, but those coconut candies can make any situation a thousand times better.

In the next post, you’ll see how you can win the Grand High Poo-Bah Prize: all the things pictured here plus a signed copy of Nice and Mean itself!

Thanks for your interest in Nice and Mean.  Let’s get this party started!

Kids Reading Nice and Mean!

Posted in Nice and Mean on 06/01/2010 01:58 pm by jess

A teacher I have respected for years is including Nice and Mean on her summer reading list (wow!  I’m honored!  And–grad school friends will laugh hysterically at this–the other choice is Tangerine!*)  When I alerted my can-do publicist of this exciting development, she rushed the teacher some classroom copies.  And when they reached the classroom, the teacher in question sent me this:

Don’t the kids look cute?  They’re my exact audience!  And some of them actually look interested in the book!

As you may know, I have a Nice and Mean fan page on Facebook, less because I think I deserve fans than because I want to let for acquaintancey Friends to opt out of hearing every last development.  The Facebook page has taken on its own personality, and she (I think of it as a she) feels like she looks pretty good in that picture!  The “mean” really pops out of the cover, if she does say so herself!

Not to mention, of course, that she’s so psyched to be touched and held by readers!  She’d been held when she was an ARC, of course, but it wasn’t the same.  There were embarrassing typos, including a manglification of one of Jess’s advisors names (Tim Wynne-Jones became Wynne Jones).  And since she’s been turned into a book, she’s had to spend several weeks sitting in a cold warehouse.  Now, however, she is finally getting a taste of warmth and love and the smell of contraband bubble-gum, and she is loving it.

Thank you, nice teacher lady, for making my day!

* Why the Tangerine pairing is funny: after teaching this book to my own seventh-graders, then studying the book for craft, I became such a rabid fan that any time a grad school classmate asked for suggestions of a book that did a particular thing–used landscape as character, or showed a great personal transformation–I’d say, “Oh!  Tangerine!”   There was almost nothing that Tangerine couldn’t do.  And it is a great thing to be honored alongside it.

Nice and Mean got WOWed!

Posted in Nice and Mean, Promotion of Self and Others on 05/27/2010 09:56 am by jess

Thanks to Reading in Color for featuring Nice and Mean as a WoW (Waiting on Wednesday) pick!  Reading in Color led the campaign against the whitewashing of covers in the publishing industry.  (Whitewashing: when a character of color is shown on the cover as being white so that white folks won’t get alienated and buy a different novel.  Read more about it here.)  Ari, who runs the blog, astounds me for being so widely read in books new and classic, featuring original and vital memes like Male Monday and Throwback Thursday.  It is truly an honor to be included as a WoW pick.  Thank you, Ari!

I might also add that, frankly, I am waiting, too–not On Wednesday, but On June 8, when Nice and Mean will finally be released.  Into the wild!  For readers to read!  It’s been a 17-month-long wait.  Let the lovin’ begin!

In the meantime, though, it sure is nice to see others are waiting excitedly along with me.  Now, go to Reading in Color and check out some other books you should be reading!

ps That is not me up there in the photo.  It is some marketer in New York.  I actually had to do two searches to find an image with “WOW,” because all the original results featured World of Warcraft!

What Movie Are You Embarrassed to Love?

Posted in Uncategorized on 05/20/2010 02:37 pm by jess

[That’s my answer.  A picture’s worth a thousand words, and while this post is only half that, you don’t need to read it to provide your answer.  You will, however, miss an amazing coincidence unless you read!]

Right around Thursday is when I run out of steam with the work-week and start posting questions on Facebook like, “What pipe-dream profession do you wish you could have?” or “What were the favorite foods of your misspent youth?”  The answers are always great–etiquette consultant!  spy!  Lick-em-ade!  Hot pockets!–and add a real boost to my productivity.  Some people work best when they are totally unplugged, but I find that as the week wears on, I work best when I have frequent, fun, brief distractions.

Today, I’m going to try a little experiment: putting the question on my blog.  I’m excited to hear answers to the question,

What movie are you embarrassed to love?

I ask because of a funny coincidence.  Fellow Tenner Jenn Hubbard and I were both psyched to be on the Summer Blast Blog Tour, she on Writing and Ruminating and I on Shaken and Stirred.  Amazingly, we both referenced the incredible Hugh Grant-Drew Barrymore movie, Music and Lyrics.  (Is anybody else noticing the conjunctive titles here?  “Writing and Ruminating”–“Shaken and Stirred”–“Music and Lyrics”–“Nice and Mean”…  I tigress.)

Anyway, I had to laugh, because while Jenn relates to the youths of today (I haven’t read her book, The Secret Year, just yet, but I’m dying to), she has a very thoughtful blog, and I’m basically kind of an entertainment snob, so the fact that we both have a thing for this goofy, kind of predictable movie was quite a surprise.

But I even cringe to dismiss the movie, because it is so great!  First of all, it start out with a dead-on-the-nose (if that’s not from the redundancy department of redunancy) spoof of an 80s video, featuring Hugh Grant’s character, called “Pop! Goes My Heart”:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qGLXpIojJkg.

A movie that can put that together knows what it’s doing, right?  Plus there are incredibly charming scenes of the songwriting collaboration:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y9uk2eFTbVY

And Hugh Grant is funny, right?  Sarcastic but also suave.  You’ve got to be observant to pull that off, too.  There’s a wicked parody of a Brittney Spears type (I’ve given you enough YouTube links to last the lunch break, but just put in “Buddha’s Delight + Music and Lyrics), a legitimate backstory for our creative collaborators…Darn it, I’m not going to be ashamed anymore:  I love Musis and Lyrics!  I think it’s great.  It’s charming and real and has New York City in the background and Hugh Grant in the foreground, and Drew Barrymore is pretty cute, too.

And now I want to know–

which movies are you

kind of

sort of

embarrassed to love?

Blob Tag, or, Adventures with a Thesaurus

Posted in Writerliness on 05/18/2010 10:52 am by jess

I didn’t like a word I’d used yesterday in my chapter, “swath.”  It’s the kind of word that would turn me off if I was reading–too studied–and, in fact, when I got to the paragraph with the offending swath, I skimmed over it.  Bad sign!  I needed a replacement.

Only thesaurus.com didn’t have any suggestions at all!  I suspect that thesaurus.com is not the most sophisticated website for thesaurily endeavors, but I didn’t have the time to search for a better one, so I thought, “Okay, what’s the closest I can come to providing a synonym, even one I wouldn’t use, and seeing where that leads me…How about ‘blob’?  Yes, let’s try blob.”

The ‘blob’ entry had many gross medical synonyms that I won’t name, but it also had, on the sidebar, a list of what I can only assume are frequently used terms involving blob.  They’re so intriguing, I had to share:

Blob volleyball
Blob fish
Blob soccer
Animated blob
Blob game
Useless blob
Emo blobs
Blob sculpin
Blob movie
Blob fish facts
Blob oracle
Adopt a blob
Adopt a blob?  Definitely sounds like a scheme I’d have come up with in third grade.  And blob oracle?  Is that like when Tiresias and Cassandra moosh together in crazy Cirque de Soleil type moves?   That will be my next research report–although I must say, maybe I should use these as writing prompts.  “Adopt a Blob” would make a great chapter book title, no?  You head it here, folks!  No biting off the blob!
Now back to our regularly scheduled programming.  If you have a useful synonym for ‘swath,’ do let me know.
